Relevance of geology in Civil Engineering, Subdivisions of Geology, Interior of the earth, Weathering, its engineering significance. Hydrogeology-occurrence of groundwater, Types of aquifers and their properties. Types of rocks. Brief account of selected rocks. Rock features that influence the strength of rocks as construction material.

GROUND IMPROVEMENT TECHNIQUES

Classification of Ground Modification Techniques, Soil distribution in India, Grouting – Aspects, Chemical stabilization – Granular admixtures, Cement, Lime, Calcium Chloride, Ground Anchors, Rock bolts – Applications and types- Rock bolt action around an excavation. Soil Nailing, Shallow surface compaction, Deep Compaction, Methods of dewatering.

ENGINEERING MECHANICS

Statics - Fundamental concepts and laws of mechanics. Concurrent and nonconcurrent forces in plane. Resultant and Equilibrium of coplanar forces. Free body diagrams. Moment of a force. Force and couple systems. Introduction to Structural Mechanics. Concurrent and nonconcurrent forces in space. Resultant and Equilibrium of forces in space. Properties of planar surfaces. Friction. 

Dynamics - Rectilinear translation. Curvilinear translation. Rotation. Combined motion of rotation and translation.Simple harmonic motion.
